Re the small wire going to the alternator:
As Ari said, it's possible that the copper wire has corroded and is no longer making a connection. Sometimes this can be a little hard to spot because the copper can corrode inside the insulation where it's not visible.
If it looks like the wire is ok, gently tug on it. If it seems to stretch, it's only attached by insulation, not copper! Splice in a new length of wire as Ari described.
