Timing chain/ Balance shaft cover removal...

Background: Head Gasket blown, head off and at machine shop for valve job.
My next step is checking the balance shaft sprockets and guides. What should I look for? I know earlier engines have sprockets that wear quickly and will look for that. What about the chain guides? How do I tell if they are worn or grooved at the factory for chain guidance? The Timing Chain guides seem to have grooves, but I can't tell if they are wear grooves or factory molded ones.
Next, inspecting the area, there's a rigid pipe from the water pump back to somewhere behind the engine that seems to block the timing cover removal... it doesn't look like it can be removed, so can the cover be removed without disturbing this?
TIA, folks!
