The rigid coolant pipe must be removed. It plugs into a rubber hose right behind the thermostat, but in my car they were fused together. It has to be disconnected from the water pump, anyway, so I just pushed it up and out of the way after removing the bolts that hold it. IIRC, there is one bolt back at the thermostat housing and another around the timing cover.
The Haynes procedure calls for removing the entire water pump, and the procedure given on Quasi's website does the same. I believe Robert Davis contributed that particular procedure. Go to Other Saab Sites on the home page to find your way to Quasi's website. I would recommend it.
The timing chain and balance shaft chain guides are not factory grooved. I replaced all of them, but the smallest of the two balance shaft chain guides can only be obtained in plastic, whereas my old one was metal. Since the grooves in it were shallow, I am re-using that one.
The crucial thing is the balance shaft chain sprocket on the crankshaft. It can be so worn that it loses teeth. The other balance shaft sprockets are not prone to wear. Some on this BB replace them, but mine didn't look at all worn, and it's a hassle to replace the two on the balance shafts themselves. The idler sprocket is easy to replace, so I'm doing that one for good measure. Good luck.
