Other than the reading on the gauge are you sure that it is actually overheating? Does it stay at the gauge reading long enough for you to stop the car, carefully undo the coolant tank cap, and check the actual coolant temp with something like a meat thermometer? Not that accurate, but if the car is really overheating you should be able to get an elevated temp even in the tank.
I've done this with mine and probably get a tank temp. within 10C of actual system temp. Its close enough to determine if you have a real problem. I found that my gauge sensor was a bit wonky. Replaced it and its read close to rock steady ever since. Some guages are sensitive enough to see some elevation going up hills but it should not be what you are describing.
In any event, worth a shot before you go to the hassle of buying a different car especially if it isn't a SAAB.
