The oxygen sensor is actually an electrolytic cell set up between outside oxygen and exhaust oxygen. This electrolytic cell generates a voltage proportional to the amount of difference in oxygen concentration. I guess you were lucky that the solder did not completely seal the wires. Saab manual also warned against using silicone based contact cleaner on oxygen sensor connectors!
