Matt, the oil charge can definitely says it's compatible with oem systems, which are pretty much all PAG. I had a local ac specialist tell me that there was no problem mixing PAG and Ester.
However, the people on the auto ac bulletin board, http://www.aircondition.com, have expressed the view that these oils will destroy each other. Also, I have seen other things on the internet indicating that these oils should not be mixed.
Here's what happened to me. In April 2001, my 93 9000 was not cooling as well as it had. I decided to add some r134a, and in case oil had leaked out with the gas, some oil. I added a 2oz oil charge can, and about 4-6 ounces of additional r134a, for a total of 2oz of oil and 6-8 ounces of r134a. Within 20 minutes, the engine started to bog down when the compressor came on at idle. It got progessively worse that day to the point it was almost stalling. I compensated by raising the base throttle to about 1000 rpms. I then replaced the AIC valve, thinking that it must be an electrical problem. I could also feel a noticeable tug when the compressor came on at speed, which was not the case before. Cooling was good, though.
This year, I took the whole thing apart and flushed with mineral spirits. I have taken apart several cars and flushed them, and I have never seen anything like the foamy brown sludge that came out of this system. I am pretty sure it was the mixed oil. Anyway, I put it back together with polyalpha+ oil which is a somewhat exotic oil from Australia that is supposed to mix with anything. I still have the stumble when the compressor engages, and it is getting progressively noisier at higher rpms.
My next step is to flush the whole thing again with brake cleaner, replace the drier again, and see what that does.
So, I can't say that you will definitely have a problem. But I can say that I did. Good luck.
