I personally flick into 'N' if I am to be stationary for longer than say 30 secs, Saab have made the stick shift freely between N and D (i.e. no lock release is required) so I figure they would have done this for a reason. My box has now done 178K miles, so far so good. I'm sure others will pitch in with for and against opinions.
Selecting manual gears on the auto box saves wear and tear by preventing the box shifting in and out of higher gears than the one selected. On a twisting back road for example you may experience the box briefly going from 3rd to overdrive on the straights then immeadiatly backing down to 3rd as you slow for the next corner, selecting 3 in this instance would stop this shifting back and forward and excessive wear to the box. I've only ever used 1 and 2 when in slow moving motorway traffic (we get a lot of that in UK) when I want to prevent the box switching to 3, however be carefull not to overrev the engine, it's easy to forget that you've resticted the box, even with the dummy lights on the dash. My suggestion is that you only change up 1 to 2 to 3 to D whilst the car is in any more than a crawl (5mph). Again Saab have made the box allow this without pressing the lock release button, shifting down whilst at speed would almost certainly cause stresses on the box as it races to catch up with the engine speed.
