"D" - everyday driving. Leave it in there. The torque converter at idle is transmitting very little power to the tranny. No need to shift to "N" while sitting.
"N" - The only reason you can shift to "N" while moving is to restart the engine in case it stalls/accidentally gets shut off when you're moving. Your daughter reaches over and switches off the car on the highway - drop it into "N", start the engine, shift to "D", and tell your daughter to never do that again.
"3" - for hilly terrain and trailering light loads. At 40-60 mph on hilly terrain, the tranny will be forced to constantly shift in and out of OD, which causes undue stress on the tranny.
"2" - Starting in low traction (ice/snow) situations. Should lock the tranny in 2nd gear and provide LESS power to the wheels when starting from a standstill.
"1" - Only used for pulling a boat out of the water, or a stranded motorist out of a ditch.
Downshifting can probably be done at any speed (within reason). Most trannies will not shift down until it reaches the road speed where that gear is possible. If I was coming down a mountain at 35 mph and it had no end in sight, I would drop the tranny from "D" to "3", pause, then "3" to "2" and let the engine start doing some of the braking. I would never drop it into "1" while rolling unless it was absolutely necessary (complete brake failure). Even then, I don't think the gear would engage until speeds were less than 20 mph or so.
Just my opinion.
