I think the older DI was missing some functionality

From what I have read, the original DI did not incorporate the knock sensing feature. DI/APC cars (to my surprise) have a separate knock sensor. I don't know when knock sensing was added, or whether it changed at the same time as the wiring harness, but the new DI cassette will fit older 9000s and the knock sensing simply isn't used.
As should be apparent, though, an old DI will not necessarily work with a Trionic car. Since your car isn't Trionic, you might find an old cassette/wiring will work. The cassette will be old, though, and might not be good value for money, no matter how little you pay for it.
As for what the turbo does to make the problem happen, it boosts the combustion chamber compression pressure. As Ari says, the higher pressure makes it harder for the spark to jump the gap and if the DI is weak, this is when it will misfire. On turbo cars, this is usually the condition under which the problem shows up first. Then it will get progressively worse until it happens even at light throttle if you delay fixing it for long enough. Apparently, it happens differently on non-turbos, which often just stop and won't go again.
