I am only familiar with the 2.3L motor.
Anders says that he loosens the lower alternator mounting bolt, un-does the top bolt, and then rotates the alternator back toward the firewall. The alternator pivots on the lower mounting bolt. Obviously, you would have to remove the belt to do this. With the alternator out of the way, you can get at the 4 bolts that hold the bracket on.
I have only done this when I have had the alternator out for other reasons. On the turbo, Jim Moncrief says you can do it on the car with a tool. I don't know how much luck people have had fabricating tools, and at $50 from Sobstory for the real deal, I am not sure fabrication makes sense. On the non-turbo, you could not do it on the car without removing the intake manifold. Don't let anyone tell you different.
