Thanks for both replies, Bill. Yes, I reckoned that car was iffy, although it shifted very nicely. I have nothing against automatics in principle. It's just that I like the involvement of a manual and they're also less complex and a bit more reliable.
I can't wait to drive a proper one. My thinking was also that the 2.0 LPT coupled with an auto box would make for a lovely smooth, easy-to-drive car.
I've looked a places like Saaben and St. George Saab, but they don't have anything suitable in my price range. The autos seem to fetch substantially more than the manuals. I'm in favour of going for a realistic mileage to get a later year at a reasonable price, but dad, living in NI, thinks anything over 60K miles is astronomical (you can't drive very far there without hitting a border or getting wet). I am fairly happy now that anything up to 100K miles in a 2.0 LPT will have enough life left to see him through the last of his driving days, given a full Saab service history to date and fastidious servicing in future. I think we'll come to a compromise eventually if I can get a decent one in the right colour, trim and gadgets, and at the right price.
I'll be maintaining it myself and it will probably go for a year between services (that'll still only be about 6000 miles), although I'll give it the once-over every time I visit.
