They're extremely popular here in the UK

Especially as company cars for executives, although the 9000 has now been replaced by the 9-5 in this market. No, not a religious revelation. More a realisation that power and handling aren't everything, as I previously believed.
They may be a bundle of trouble in your particular market, I can't comment on that, but here they are regarded as being quite a reliable car. Naturally, once you get into buying older high-tech cars without a good service history, you can expect problems. Ask people about the later Mercedes models (mid-'90s on) and I think you'll dig up some dogs there too, as these are more sophisticated than the older ones and require more attention to servicing.
All my 9000s (four to date) have had a full Saab service history when I bought them (and of the two I have since sold, one still had a full Saab service history, and the other was too old to warrant the expense and I serviced it myself). I wouldn't buy a Saab, or any other "high-tech" car without one.
I really don't know what your point is. The only times I have been left stranded were when I blew up the engine on my Aero (tell me how many people you've seen on the board complaining of that happening), and a dead battery, which I think can happen on any car.
Which cars would suggest I consider as an alternative, and why aren't you driving one instead of a Saab?
