I drove an '88 900S, then upped to a '96 900S, then finally got myself into a dream-come-true: a '98 9000 CSET. Drove Saabs since '94, but really got to understand (and enjoy) the true brute power and force behind them, while still maintaining an edge of grace in their exterior and handling in '01 when I purchased my Black Beauty.
As was mentioned, the AERO has the guts and glory, but the CSE (FPT) is just a fraction behind. Don't be too worried about the auto; I have seen problems asked about for the manual as well as the auto transmission. Just make sure you have some sort of a history on the car, and continue to care for it as you own it. FREQUENT a/t fluid changes are essential.
I thoroughly loved my 900S's, and still hold high respect for them. But with the 9000 comes more power, more room, and more comfort. I doubt I'll ever go back to a 900 again.
You've got a lot of help here on this bb as well, should the need arise (and it will, especially when the "upgrade-bug" bites you...). We've all "been there" before, and will probably learn from your experiences too!
Good luck!!!
Joe
