... a weak mixture, leading to high combustion temperatures. My '96 Aero failed the UK emissions test due to high lambda (weak mixture). NOx isn't measured directly during this test. The dealer was useless in diagnosing this and I had to work out for myself which things could affect the mixture. The fault turned out to be the intake air temperature sensor. This was out of spec according to the Trionic documentation on the Townsend Imports site, but obviously not enough to trigger a "check engine" light.
This sensor was reading a higher than actual temperature, leading Trionic to underestimate the air density and therefore the air mass, and to put in too little fuel. The sensor was around £20 (US$30). It is halfway along the aluminium pipe between the intercooler and the throttle body.
