Interesting thread since I just picked-up my daughter's '94 900S ( with the non direct ignition 2.3L) It had failed the biannual state inspection due to high NoX (reading was 1480 versus 1200 maximum allowable). This had also happened to her two years ago. Brought the car to the local non-Saab garage, who has a good reputation. His immediate diagnosis was that the "EGR valve was bad". When I told him that the car didn;t have an EGR valve, he had to stop and think.
To make a long story short, he did a tune-up on the car, which has 110K miles, including cap, rotoe, plugs, air and fuel filter. The NoX emission reading after he did this work was 10.
He said that high NoX is due to high combustion temps, which can be due to retarded ignition, which was corrected with the tune-up. Whatever the case, the car runs better that it has in the 2+ years that my daughter has owned it.
