I mistakenly posted the this to an early conversation thread. Someone (Bill?) was asking about longevity in the autotransmissions.
Can someone explain it once an for all?
My input first. My Dad gave me his 86 9000 2 years ago. It's getting a bit ugly, for such a beautiful car, it's got 228k on it. Been from New York to Alaska. Twice. However, the first auto-trans went at 26k, the second at 120k. This one is starting to act up. So that's the history. I think that it's care and luck, but they last between 80 to 100k. Amazing car, aside from it's known quirks. Now this one is starting to go...
Now the tech question for everyone. What is it that causes the tranny to start missing 4th gear? It will shift when cold a few times. As I get on the highway, it shifts to 4th, then it revs and then engages it properly. What causes this?
1. Can it be repaired cheaply?. 2. If I leave it in third gear (traffic doesn't let me get over 50 anyway)would that prolong it's usable life? What about repeatedly flushing the tranny fluid, since I've heard that it doesn't all drain out during maintenance?
Thanks everyone.
