... which must be pretty close to you, I took my Aero there when the battery died. They pronounced it healthy (it was starting fine by then, even though I'd driven it straight from work where I'd had to jump-start it) and strongly advised me against buying a new one. On the way back home, as I braked for the last roundabout on the A4146 out of Hemel, the engine died momentarily and the battery light came on. I was booked into Squire Furneaux the next day anyway, and I asked them to look at it. They found a couple of dead cells and fitted a new battery (for about 60% more than Central Tyre, of course). It was fine for over a year until the aforementioned episode. Like you, I have left the car for weeks at a time with no subsequent battery problems.
My car also has VSS.
