"Shifting" an automatic...

I have read on this bb about being careful with the ZF unit (auto-tranny) to not allow it to make upshifts at WOT (wide-open-throttle).
Since I have recently upgraded to a JT 3" full exhaust system, as well as a K&N air filter, and am waiting (with bated breath) for my BSR-upgraded Stage 3 ECU to arrive any day now, I have a question about the tranny.
My tranny was replaced recently with a rebuilt one, and basically only has 3K miles on it (long story, but was due to a factory-defect in the hole where the shift-linkage goes into the case). The car itself only has 54K on it. For those "few" moments when I have the urge to prove to the unbelieving that a Saab 9K can kick some serious butt, I will move the selector from "D" to "3", and give it the gas then (in effect, circumventing the kick-down response). When I approach the 5000 RPM mark, I take my foot off the gas and then move the selector back into "D", basically simulating shifting a manual from 3rd to 4th (without the clutch, of course). The tranny shifts into 4th at that time (smoothly), and I continue to give it gas until I've left the unsuspecting in my rear-view mirror.
Question: is this harmful to the tranny? Is this the "correct" way to shift it when driving the car hard?
Also, can this be done for all gears (1 -> 2 -> 3 -> D) when racing from a standstill?
Again, I do NOT make a habit of this, but there ARE those times when...
TIA
Joe
