The automatic in the 9000 is not the greatest part of the car. The good point is that it's a smooth-shifting 4 speed. The bad point is that the average lifetime of the transmission is 80K- 120K miles (130K - 200K Km). The transmission tends to last longer on non-turbo cars.
100K miles (on average) isn't bad, it's just that for a car that normally goes over 200K miles, we expect more.
There are many transmission problems that can be repaired fairly inexpensively ($100- $400). If the problems are left unrepaired, the transmission can completely fail, and a rebuilt unit costs about $2500 installed. So if the transmission begins to act up - shift hard, miss shifts, etc, it pays to get it fixed immediately.
Frequent fluid changes can make the tranny last longer. No guarantee, but it doesn't hurt. Frequent means every 15K- 20K miles.
All of my 9000's have automatic transmissions. My preference is a manual, but you can't have everything in life. Because of a hip problem in our family, a clutched car is out of the question. So we have automatics. I've replaced a few over the years. Big deal. If I can get 100K miles out of an automatic that costs $2500, that's about $350-$400 a year for the tranny. Cars cost money to keep running.
What specifically are you looking for? If you have a choice, I always recommend a manual. The car is faster, more reliable, and gets better gas mileage. But manual trannies are not bulletproof, and they fail, too. If you want/need an automatic, then get one.
Good luck!
