In fact, I dont see how you could install a car stereo without splicing wires somewhere.
You take the old harness that connects to the stock head unit and you cut it off and strip the wires, then match them up to the harness for the new head unit and splice away! You can even solder them if you like or just use some decent electrical twist caps. I used the latter approcah to wire in my CD-45z and I have done the same with several other stereos before that and I've NEVER had any problems or had any caps fall off. The twist caps are quite solid and WILL NOT come off if you get good ones with the metal threads inside. In my opinion, if twist caps are good enough for electrical house wiring, then the're good enough for my car stereo.
Just twist a cap on there very tight and try to pull it off...it's not going anywhere. This approach is very clean, easy and fast and simplifies doing any reconfiguration down the road (I change my setup all the time).
Sure it looks a little sloppy but who cares? It's inside the dash where no one will ever see it.
Good Luck!
