Aero....timing chain....Help!!!

Hey Folks,
I posted a question a few days ago and I am still stuck. Yesterday, my '94 aero with 68k on her, died in the middle on the road. I still had electrical power, ie headlamps and windows. Voltage read 11 volts. When I tried to crank the car, I can a very faint and short crank. I had the car to towed to a local generic garage. The guy called me back today and told me the timing chain snapped. HOw is that possible. He quoted me $2,500 to $3,000 to repair!!! I guess if the timing chain really snapped, have bent valves. My next cause of action is to tow it home and try to fix it myself. My question at this point is:
(1) Can it really be the timing chain?
(2) Is it tough to replace?
(3) What is the average cost to replace it?
(4) Is timing chain failure common on the 2.3 engine.
It just seems ashame to have this type of failure with a engine with 68k. Please help. Thanks
Patrick
