Jeez, that is bad luck. As for the repair estimate, Townsend's figures are likely to be a few years old, so expect actual costs now to be a little different. Also, the damage can vary depending on when the chain broke. If it broke while idling, damage would be minimal; if it broke under full boost at high rpm, well, you can imagine it would be far worse.
Can You do the repair? How skilled and organized are you? Removing the head is a fairly involved procedure that requires you to keep many small pieces organized as to where they went so you can put all of them back in their proper places when you put things back together. You also need at least the Haynes manual for proper torque values for the bolts and basic info on what order to remove things and what order to put them back. (I've found that this varies from the manual some, but it is a good guide.)
That said, the job really requires patience, dexterity, good eyesight, and a little "common sense" about machines. Don't rush the process or it will be a disaster. If you need transportation right away, buy a "beater" you can drive while you do the work with the money you will save repairing it yourself. You can sell it when you get the Aero back on the road. JMHO as I do the valve job/ head gasket on my Aero.
Good Luck!
