smoked my brakes, now what?

Coming back from a camping trip, I had the unfortunate experience of gettimg my brakes so hot they smoked. I knew better than to ride the brakes all the way down the mountain; but it was several miles of a 9% grade, and the speed limit is a strictly enforced (by police and the fact that you'd miss a curve and end up in the river 150 feet below) 35 mph.
So when you start to smell the burning brakes, do you pull over, and let them cool, or find some other way of slowing the car (dumping down a gear, e-brake, etc...) and allow the ventilated disks to do their thing?
If you did stop, and smoke wafted up from your front wheels, what would one need to do to make sure the brakes are going to be usable miles down the road?
Has anyone else had this happen? I was a bit surprised, as I'd been down that canyon a number of times in my wife's Satrun, and never had that problem. My car is an '86 9000 turbo.
Let's say I was interested in upgrading the brakes on my car; what's the group consensus on what to do in this vein?
Cheers!
-Ben
