Does the bypass valve hold vacuum?

A split bypass valve might cause this. Does your boost gauge work at all? If not, it's likely the vacuum hose to the gauge that has come off or broken. This would make the noise very loud if it's broken/disconnected inside the car.
Other than that, the only other thing I can think of is that one of the end tanks on the intercooler has come off.
