I've done two of the three methods on a '85 900T that I recently sold at 180k miles. The first time at around 120k, I bought a cartridge from a southeast co. that specialized in turbos for OTR tractors. They sold a Saab cart as an experiment. Rebuild kits were not available at the time, although the vanes were rubbing on the housing, so a rebuild would not have been recommended.
As I recall the cart swap was clean. Then at around 175k, it started showing blue smoke and hint of turbo noise. So I bought a rebuild kit from a co. in California. Not TSN sponsor, found via web search engine. Anyway, the kit turned out to be a slight disappointment, mostly because the cart I used earlier was already rebuilt-that is, bearing seats turned and re-balanced and some of the main parts were totally different despite it being identified as an equal. The only things I could change out of the kit were the oil seals and springs. The [sleeve] bearings were oversized [due to the previous machining]. All I could do was to clean everything with carb cleaner [oil galleries were clogged] and put parts back together with new where I could. At least it didn't smoke afterwards, but since I was aware of its condition, didn't 'push' it.
If I remember in my last search for the rebuilt kit, there were several web sites with cartridges available. You might just have to go beyond the TSN circles.
