Having thought about this some more, I now recall my 93CS with the Seiko compressor doing the same thing on two occasions when it was overcharged.

My first thought about this post was overcharge also. I initially discarded this thought, though, because an overcharge should not trip the pressure switch while cruising since the airflow will keep high side low. But that's pressure, not heat.

I have noticed on my 93 with the Seiko compressor that an overcharge will produce a mysterious absence of cold air after the system has been running for about the same amount of time that this guy is reporting. The compressor shuts down and I suspect the thermal switch in the compressor. There is definitely 12v going to the compressor, but no spin from the clutch. The wire to the compressor goes into the compressor body and comes out a different color, which I understand to be thermal protection for the compressor.

Dropping the charge down to 2.8 times ambient will prevent this condition. I don't understand why an overcharge will produce a thermal overload when the car is moving. But, I can say for certain that it has happened to me. I wonder if it is something to do with the design of the rotary vane compressor. The Sanden's don't even have thermal protection.

So, Michael, here is what you do. Convert the ambient temperature to degrees F. Then multiply that number by 2.8. The resulting number is the high side pressure (in psi) you want to see after the system has stabilized at 1500 rpms with the doors and windows open. I believe that one bar is 14.5 psi, or something like that.
