Help -- Replacing Fuel line Check Valve and Fuel Pump

Hello. We leave tomorrow on a long trip and I need some help. My 1989 9000T has the fuel pump with the check valve mounted on top. I picked a new valve up at the local dealer this morning but when I removed my old one I found that it will not screw into the fitting on top of the fuel pump -- it has a bigger diameter and the threads are too coarse. The dealer claims that this is impossible but I am holding both of them in my hands and they are clearly designed to be screwed into different fittings. I may have my father who is a machinist turn new threads on the dealer supplied part but does anyone know if I should be able to buy a part with the proper size?
Also, I tested the fuel pump with the line removed and found that it took about three seconds of cranking before the pump began pumping fuel out of the top. Seems too long to me ... anyone know?
Thanks.
Dan
