Reverse switch blow to bits and looking for the pieces

1994 9000 Aero 5 sp - I recently had my reverse lights stop functioning and I though nothing of it. I though I will just get a replacement switch and replace it when I do my next service. Well, a month had lapsed and I started that much delayed work. Much to my surprise, I found that when I removed the reverse switch from the transmission the spring loaded nipple was missing along with whatever bits were behind it. I then thought lets drain the fluid and see what we find. The fluid (Saab's synthetic stuff) was a little darker than normal with a slight silver tint, but no chunks of stuff. I would have thought that with a month's worth of driving, the manual gears would have chewed up something by now.
Has anyone had an experience like this? Should I break the case and going looking for my MIA parts?
While I was there, I also upgraded the shifter linkage and included a pic of the new vs. old part.
Cheers,
