I too have the blue lights for the headlights. But what I'm wondering is if what you describe as "chugging" could be a sign of a dirty IAC (idel air control) This bypasses the throttle to keep the idle speed constant, they seem to need cleaning on a regular bassis. Check the idle spped with the A/C off and on, It should be the same or a little higher with the A/C on. If its slowing down the engine, you may get so slow the alternator is not putting out enough, and the headlights are not both re-acting the same to this voltage fluctuation. The pictogram works by compareing the left and right bulb in each monitored circuit, any difference should light the light. Re-seat the connectors on your headlights, they may just be a little dirty.
Good advice on the taillights here. They need to be the same (just like the headlight bulbs, there are differences between brands) Also bad connections at the tailight bulbs and the ground wires to them have been known to cause problems. These are problems that can ussually be seen, a green crud growing on a connection is a sign of corrosion, just requires cleaning and some electric grease to prevent re-occurance.
