I think you have a bigger problem than what is suggested here. If your octane isn't sufficient, Trionic will sense incipient detonation by compensating and allowing less boost. You should not be able to hear detonation, at least I've never heard it in my '95 Aero, or any of my other four turbo Saabs in any situation.
I have an aftermarket ECU installed that allows up to 23 psi max boost, something hard to attain with regular pump gas, and in hot weather and using 93-octane gas I get detonation that affects the performance of the car, but I never hear it. I suspect you have a fundamental problem with the knock detection function of the ECU. What strikes me as even more bizarre is that you are getting detonation in first gear.
