Hi, I have had a LONG period of similar adventures with my '92 9kT and while the engine management software is different (Jetronic v. Trionic), I assume most of this will be the same between our cars. Some questions first: Do you have the Traction Control System (TCS) on your car? If you can look at it, does the throttle body have a 7-pin connector to the black plastic piece in the rear or a 3-pin?
Reasons for asking are thus: If you have a traction control system then there is no IAC (idle valve) for your car, the car regulates the idle automatically at the throttle body. The reason I asked about the connector is that if there is a 7-pin connector to the back of the throttle body, then it is a 1 piece replacement. The most likely piece to break on the throttle body is the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), having pulled one apart it doesn't seem like there is too much else that can go wrong unless the butterfly valve is bad. Anyway, if there is a 7 pin connector, get ready to spend some cash on a completely new throttle body, I'm afraid that's just the way it is. To soften the blow though, I went to an out of state Saab store that ships parts at a discount. They are called Kachina Saab (Cadillac/Hummer/etc.) at (800) 955-1205. I had a really good experience getting parts from them. HOWEVER, if it is a bad TPS and there is a 3-pin connector, that can be replaced for I think $65 from any Saab dealer.
One note, though, is that after the throttle body gets replaced (and possibly if the TPS gets replaced) the car must have the TCS recalibrated. Good luck!
