Pat, it's easy and quick to separate the engine from the transaxle,
once it's out of the vehicle and on the floor. There's 6-18 mm bolts
that hold the bellhousing to the engine. Also, you'll have to remove
an 11 mm bolt for the plate at the bottom of the bellhousing and a
16 mm bolt on the starter (optional). Once those are removed,
the whole transaxle can be slid away from the engine. I usually
have the engine supported and remove the transaxle by hand -
I'm able to lift the transaxle by myself, but it isn't light, by any means!
Just make sure that when you put it back together, you don't try
assembling it with the intermediate shaft and bearing support
member still attached - it's easy breaking that support member
(ask me why I know this!). It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes
to separate the transaxle from the engine.
I cannot say, with 100% certainty, whether the LPT, or the FPT,
engines have the same internal components as the Aero (B234R).
I recall a few posts by Aeroguy saying the B234R did have better
pistons. I'd go back and check some of his posts (there's many!)
as he seemed pretty knowledgeable and had a lot of 'insider' info'.
You might try posting a message to Karl, also, as he has connections with people who work at engine development in
Sweden.
I was lucky to find a very low mileage '98 drivetrain (10k miles),
two years ago. It has 50k miles on it now and is sitting in a '94
Aero, also. The engine has been nothing short of spectacular.
Powerwise, it would put many V8's to shame, yet still gives good gas mileage.
