TDC is Top Dead Center, for cylinder #1. That's when the #1 piston is at its highest point in the stroke. There are a few ways to turn the engine over. A lot depends on your tranny. If you have a manual, I like to put the car into 5th gear on a flat surface, and rock the car - the engine will turn over. If you pull the spark plugs, it'll turn over even easier. DON'T do this on a hill, very embarassing....
If you have an automatic, that trick won't work. You must stick a wrench on a pulley. The main pulley works fine, but is way down there. If you pull the spark plugs, the engine turns very easily, and you can probably do it by turning an accessory (power steering pulley or the like).
To get to TDC, look at the timing marks on the flywheel. You want to line up to 0. Frankly, to be perfectly sure, I take a long wooden dowel and drop it down the #1 cylinder spark plug hole. I say long, because the very last thing you want to do is drop something down the cylinder that you can't get out. Wood is nice because it's soft and won't scratch. Turn the engine over until the dowel moves up, then *just* starts to move down. Move it back a hair. This should like up with the '0' mark on the flywheel.
