Resistor for 97 9000 cooling fans - will this work?

I am considering purchasing a 1997 Saab 9000. However, I would hesitate to purchase this car if I can't get the rad fans to turn on at 82 degress Celcius. It is my understanding that the ECU already does a good job of keeping the coolant temperature around 82 degrees Celcius. But I am taking a worse case scernario and thinking that "what if the ECU can't do this". Is there some type of manual way to meet my objective of turning the rad fan on at 82 degrees Celcius?
I was checking out the Townsend website and noticed this page (under technical documents - cooling systems):
http://216.78.172.244/electrical_system_folder/sb2spfanresispg1.htm
This page talks about replacing a resistor so that you don't have to buy a whole new fan in the event of a resitor not working properly. Is it possible to find and use a resistor of this nature to help ensure that a 97 9000 rad fan will turn on at 82 degrees Celcius. Or, is this resistor only good for the 2.0 l motor rather than the 2.3 l motor?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA.
