I did the same thing about 2 years ago. I took it a little further, I kept increasing the distance of the alterante holes 3/8" at a time. I took out about 2" of throw between 1st and 2nd, and about 2 1/4" between 3rd and 4th. I had to make an extension to add to the lenght of the shift shaft and machined up my own shifter knob from aluminum...cold to hold on too in the winter though.
I also completely removed the reverse lock out and replace the rubber/plastic bushing in the base and replaced it with an aluminum ring. If you decide to do this the motor must be solid, no movement what so ever. I replace all the engine and tranny mounts with Delrin bushings and the bottom hydraulic mounts with solid rubber. You get a little extra noise and buzzing in the passenger compartment, I like it like that.
The feel and action of the shifter now is incredable, power shifts are a piece of cake...like a knife through butter.
cheers, and happy trails
John
