Corrosion on the lower front control arm and supports?

I'm not sure if the correct terminology is "control arm" but I think so. The direct translation from Swedish is "link arm" if that makes more sense. Anyway, corrosion on lower front of these on the 9k is supposed to be very common so maybe you can guess what I'm after.
I can see that the supports are worn out and they're only $6 each and it seem like a feasible d.i.y job to change them. Anyone got a good write-up on the procedure?
However, changing the arms would be a $1000 job so I'm wondering if these can simply be cleaned from corrosion, while still in place, and painted with rust protection. Anyone done this and how did it turn out? New ones are over $200 each and it seems to be a real pain to remove them.
The car is a -91 CC non-turbo 2.3 with ABS. I just spent $300 on a CV-joint replacement and need new snow tires for the winter so spending $1000 on a repair just isn't an option at the moment. I paid $2500 for it half a year ago and it would really suck to have paid almost as much in repairs the first year :o( so any d.i.y tips for this control arm problem are highly appreciated.
I'll shut up now
/Ola
