But from the top of my head I remember that at least there was some plumbing blocking the way, like a fuel rail. Depending on how much you want to dismantle first try to get to it without taking the manifold off.
I plan to go take the cover off tomorrow (cleaning the throttle, hopefully getting the KD cable exactly right) so I can take a better look. If there is anything I remember looking at it, I'll post.

I very much appreciate if you could fax these instructions to me. Both Townsend and Haynes do not mention special tools. So perhaps I am missing something.
My fax # is in NL: +31 70 4461430, attn. of Jan Geert van Hall

Isn't it curious that I also have a bit of a hard shift 3-4 and I also found out the last service left the tranny overfilled? Do Saabtechs hate V6's?
I am puzzled by the mm distances you mention. Especially that the travel to kickdown is 40mm and to full throttle is 44mm. 44mm is off by any spec I've seen. And besides, the KD point is beyond the full throttle point, so travel should be longer. These points are clearly to be felt when operating the lever on top of the engine manually. It is checked very easily, and you will be just there anyway.
I adjusted mine to 39mm from rest to full throttle, and the plastic stop was a couple of mm out of the outer cable at rest. This all looked sensible to me and the car was very much improved in terms of shifting, being too 'early' before and not letting me into the higher rpm at acceleration. But it still has the harsh 3-4 shift, although less bad.
I attached a link to where I got the procedure I followed from.
