I had the BassLinkX installed by a local audio shop, with a remote power on lead (ensures that the unit will definitely power off when the radio is off). I think they got the signal from the amp underneath the passenger seat. I mounted it (myself) vertically facing the rear of the vehicle, on the right side, behind the lid (as far back as possible).
Sounds great, and I named it the Saabwoofer...
