Even though I did not think long and hard before taking the plunge, (There was no time to do it. I was scanning the ebay saab 9k entries for a horn button.) making it a parts car wasn't in my plan. Where I live is not like in the country side where there is lots of open space. East Brunswick, NJ is 30 miles south west of Manhattan. I don't have a two acre lot or a shed to store a parts car. We are on a 1/3 acre lot, typical two car garage middle class nighborhood.
But during that short time, I was thinking exactly you said. I won't feel too bad if it turns out to be a dud. Anyway, my take has always been that as long as the car has a decent body, mechanical problems can be fixed one way or another.
The first thing I'll do after getting it will be to pull the drive train, replace the clutch and whatever else need to be replaced.
