the thing you want to do to check the Turbo; take of the intake hose going into the Turbo its the one that is on the right side of the Turbo going into the compressor) and wiggle the Turbo shaft side to side with your fingers. If there IS play then Turbo bearing is loose and the Turbo will go soon.

If you get a chance to take it for a ride you may want to stop somewhere and do the above (all you need is a scewdriver to looses the hose clamp)While you're stopped check the oil by removing the dipstick. If the oil is dirty (and I think you know what dirty oil looks like) that should give you an idea of the maintence. After you check the oil, drip a bit of oil right on the Turbo manifold. If it starts to fizzle like water evoparating then head gasket make be (probably) blown.

Lastly, Look under car (where its currently stored) is the a puddle/stains on the ground/under the car? Examine the fluids, as NT Moore pointed out if the hydrolics are leaking its bad news...

PS the 89 has ABS which may be suspect but I don;t have info as to how to check it.
