Split roller timing chain. Posted by Gene N [Email] (#1094) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Gene N) on Thu, 3 Oct 2002 16:08:39 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
While I'm waiting for my head to get back from the machine shop, I took a good look at the timing chain that broke on my 1991 Saab Turbo, 2.3L with 120K miles. Damn if it isn't one of those split roller chains that are supposed to be a problem. On these chains the roller is made out bent metal (hence the split where the two ends meet) instead out of a cut piece of tube like you would expect. Saab apparently saw the error in their ways, because they soon went back to the type of chains used on the 2.0L engines, with the standard rollers.
My recommendation is that that anyone with a 1991 should check their chain if they have the valve cover off, and replace the chain with a new one if they have a split roller variant.
