The chain broke, which I thought was unusual for only 120K miles. My other older Saab has almost 170K miles with the original (non-split roller) chain and it is not unheard of for people to have well over 200K on the original chain. My assumption is that the type of chain is the difference, since the design of the timing system between the two engines is very similar. (The chains are not interchangable--I think that the 2.3L chain is longer and perhaps slightly narrower.)
The head is at the machine shop because I bent 4 exhaust and 2 intake valves when the chain broke.
Even though it is not absolutely necessary, I'll probably roll in a new chain on the older Saab (a 1990 9000) and put in a new tensioner sometime in the next 10K miles, just for piece of mind.
