Suprisingly there is quite a bit of sunshine at the moment where I am. but this isn't usually the case.
The displays are usually dim when you start the engine and when you start driving, after 5-10 mins it brightens up. I especially notice it in daylight as it is difficult to see.
If you start the car soon after a previous journey, the display either takes less time to come up to full brightness, or is bright immediately. But always after long periods of standing the illumination is dim to start with.
I'll try cleaning the sensor and see if that makes a difference. BTW, in the UK we don't have Q-Tips, they're called cotton buds! (bet you could live without knowing that!!)
