neutral without using the clutch, by tapping or letting off the gas at the correct moment as to "unload" the drivetrain? I do this habitually when I know ill be waiting at a light anyway, no need to sit there in gear spinning the throwout bearing. As has been said before, downshifting is fine for spirited driving when your anticipating needing a lower gear in a hurry, but not in traffic or around town, brakes are a lot cheaper than trannys. Im also a big fan of skipping 4th most of the time, straight from 3rd to 5th.
