Would it tell you anything in particular if the rattle in my cabin temperature sensor does not begin until the engine is actually engaged?

I'll be more specific...

A while back I popped the cover off the cabin temp sensor, blew some compressed air and silicone in there, and the little rattle seemed to stop. Cool.

Not all that long thereafter, however, the rattle, obviously having missed me, returned. I popped the cover off again, in an effort to see if I could visualize the fan turning (or not) or anything of that sort. Since I've no idea what I'm looking at as usual, I turned the car off, and then turned on the battery part (you know, when you turn the key just enough to listen to some tunes but not enough to engage the engine?) Okay, I did that and allowed the heat/fan/etc. to go on. No rattle.

I turned the key fully in order to engage the engine and...rattle rattle rattle.

I tried saying "cut it out" and "knock it off", but the rattler is unimpressed and unintimidated.

Any ideas as to why the rattle does not occur when the heat and fan are engaged, but only when the engine is?

Geez, I need to work on brevity.
