A reasonable idea.. problem is you should (must?) use a two part foam.. NOT the stuff inna Spray can from Home Depot.. it has virtually no structural strength.. read: useless for the intended result.
Water can be a problem if some can get in between the metal and the foam.. But if competently applied under pressure from a gun, the foam sticks itself to the metal (which is in factory new condition..Right?)aggresively and only physical damage will allow water in.
The structural strength is increased significantly by the proper use of Foam Fill.. but it has to be done with knowledge and the appropriate materials.
