Hi,
I sorta have a similar problem but not the same degree as you. If everything is tight then the only thing I can think of is two things:
1. There is a rubber boot the goes into the hole where the shifter rod enters the body of the car. I think if that is ripped/missing that you dramatcly increase the play of the stick.
2. After checking 1. see if you can adjust the stick... Another words lossen the rod as it enters the coupling and place the shitfer in gear, any gear like 3rd (an assistant would help here).
