The starting TBN should have no relationship with performance, and is a measure of the oil's ability to absorb acid, which you probably already know. I think to say that it is the PH of the oil is an over-simplification, but I'd like to learn more about what the specification really entails. Maybe one of the Chem-E's or some other erudite sole will
enlighten us with an explanation.
I believe that a starting TBN of 10-12 is higher than normal, as the 15w40 Royal Purple I use in the Aero starts at around eight, I think, and is rated for diesels. But at 10k miles it is always at a safe level, so I'm not sure why it would need to be higher for my application.
