I've installed many DC motors of various sizes and I stripped each and every one BEFORE installation to check that everything was OK. I found a suprisingly large percentage of motors that would not or could not have run without being checked first (like foreign bodies in the motor housing etc) I am amazed at the number of manufacturers who put slips of paper between the brushes and the commutator when assembling the motor and there's never any indication that they should be removed prior to installation. The paper is put there to stop any moisture scarring the commutator or the brushes sticking to it. Strip the motor carefully and make sure that all is well, especially the bearings.
That's my 2c worth.
