Water pump Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Wed, 30 Oct 2002 09:06:13 In Reply to: belt broke, car got hot- damage?, Chris M, Wed, 30 Oct 2002 07:25:04 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The problem with driving the car is that the water pump doesn't turn without the belt. Since the water wasn't pumping, it didn't make it to the radiator, so the fan won't come one.
The bad news here is that with no water flow, you got hot spots in the engine, and have run a real risk of warping the head. It didn't get that hot near the temperature sensor, but again, no water flow. Outside temperature doesn't help (much) because the radiator isn't involved - just the temperatures inside the engine near the combustion chambers.
In addition to replacing the belt, I would do an oil change. High temperatures degrade oil very quickly. As to head damage, I would keep a very close eye on coolant AND oil levels. Any changes, UP or DOWN, can be a sign of head damage. That's in addition to power loss, leakage from the head, and signs of oil or coolant in the exhaust.
Let's hope there was no head damage.
Good luck!
